The darkest corners of human society in Nishioka Kyodai’s comics

With the dark stories that can be found in modern life, Nishioka Kyodai has turned them into unforgettable horror comics.

Nishioka Kyodai is a 2-member mangaka group. Their first works appeared quite early, in 1989. In the following years, Nishioka Kyodai’s comics became famous, although until 2010 until now, Malaysian readers have a chance to continue accessing the unforgettable stories of this author group.

The manga of the Nishioka Kyodai group, though drawn like a children’s story, is aimed at young people, with dark content. The theme of the story often revolves around heartbreaking stories, social evils, suicide, problems in modern life and the fear of existentialism.

For example, one-shot “For My Children”, the author has mentioned a topic that everyone has to face in life: should they have children or not. Before the big decisions of life, everyone stopped before the conflict: whether or not to give birth, when the current conditions are not good, and you do not like to be bound by children?

Stories are often told in an autobiographical voice, with little or no dialogue. Combined with images, the stories become ingenious metaphors. For example, in the “Wolf Girl” oneshot, while the character says she is with a wild wolf, the storyline is a human.

Nishioka’s sense of hovering, silent, eerie became a horror in itself, comparable to Ito Junji. Both refer to the strange, mysterious phenomena of the world and people. However, while Ito Junji is often a fiction, Nishioka refers to the dark corners that exist in real life.

Scary, the most dazed is still “God’s child”. The story is about a child compared to the child of God, with extremist, wicked, dark thoughts, to avenge the world.

God’s child, like the other works of the Nishioka group, has no dialogue but only the autobiography of the characters. The story follows the child from before birth, childhood to adulthood. As a child, this child was unusual but seemed to carry the psychology of a psychopathic murderer. Although talented, superior, but it has extremist, depraved, cruel thoughts.

However, Nishioka always leaves a question that makes readers constantly wonder: is this child born simply cruel, or because of the terrible things happening around a society that made him like that? The plot of the story hits readers with dark shocks: from the story of a child seeing a teacher raped, until the first murder.
