It is not easy to become a comic artist/writer, more in Malaysia. Just try counting with both hands, how many local cartoonists have made it big abroad and chances are you’ll have some unused fingers. While the Internet has broken geographical boundaries, there are still other long-standing challenges.
There are many options available for ambitious comic creators today, say, five or 10 years ago. In addition to self-publishing, there are specialized local publishers such as Maple Comics and Garaj Komik.
During the Geek Con event in March, self-published topics and avenues of specialized publishers were discussed. There are advantages and disadvantages, but both roads share a common goal – to help local artists and writers publish their works.
Streets Of Red (RM15)
The story of this mature reader should be your cup of tea if you had a very bad experience with the cycling gangs, as it was inspired by a report about a young woman being attacked by a bandage. Bicycle party at the gas station – and no one turned up for help.
The main character of the comic is The Rider, a type of Wheeler, who is on a mission to avenge the death of his lover, who was killed by a biker gang named The Stingers.
The only self-published title out of reviews this week, this is a positive start for the creative duo, although there is still a lot of work needed in terms of plot (and sub-story). and in the art department. However, it is worth noting that a lot of effort (and cost) went on to make sure that high quality paper was used for its book and cover.
Scenes Of The Father (RM20)
One person found the rib band Amir biology quite interesting, because he said he liked to spend his entire writing career talking about himself! Well, if you don’t know or never talk to him, you’ll probably find that statement too much; on the contrary, Amir is a visionary, not only wants to talk about himself but also help others share/publish their stories.
In the latest Maple Comics product, Amir shares his childhood, his father, his kampung history and a proven unscientific relationship between cow dung and elephant ear wax! While such stories are often shared in family reunions, more than 90 pages here make me feel like a distant relative of Amir.
Anyway, it is NOT all about Amir because we have Chee (remember IDW Wake Wake The Dead?) About artist duties. He is an established mainstream artist who has published his work in several countries. The style that fits the Chir rib noir-ish style perfectly reflects the past, when the duo created a highly thought-provoking explosion from Amir rushing through.
Pelempang Realiti (RM20)
Another travel book, in which Arif Rafhan shares his Southeast Asian trip with a group of former classmates. On the outside, the title has a dreadful feeling, though, the slap from the title comes from the gray they encounter, especially after experiencing childhood that makes them see the world in black and white.
Similar to Jejon Di Jepun, it will appeal to those who have similar experiences with what is shared by the creator or his friends. It can be counterproductive if you are interested in a larger audience. However, Arif still shows a prolific storytelling talent. One suggestion is that he should learn more about his creative descendants and not just focus on travel.
